"I became a vet because every animal I ever met trusted me before I earned it. I spend every day trying to deserve that."

"The best part of this job is seeing a nervous rescue come back a year later with a wagging tail and a family who adores them."

"I'm usually the first person your pet meets. My job is to make sure that first moment feels safe — for them and for you."

Why Maplewood Exists

"I opened this clinic because I wanted to practice the kind of medicine I believe in."

Where we know your pet's name before you walk through the door. Where we never rush an appointment because the schedule says so. Where a worried phone call at 5pm on a Friday gets a real person, not a recording.

Corporate veterinary chains are buying up independent practices across the country. At Maplewood, we chose a different path. We answer to our patients and their families — not to shareholders. And that changes everything about how we practice.

First Visit

What to expect as a new patient

Your first visit should feel easy, not stressful. Here's everything you need to know so you and your pet can walk in feeling prepared.

1

What to bring

Any previous medical records or vaccination history you have. If you're coming from another clinic, we can request records for you — just let us know when you book.

2

What we'll do

A full nose-to-tail exam, a conversation about your pet's history and lifestyle, and a care plan tailored to them. First appointments run about 45 minutes — we don't rush.

3

How to prepare

Keep cats in a carrier and dogs on a leash. If your pet is anxious at the vet, let us know ahead of time — we have quiet rooms and go-slow protocols for nervous visitors.

Kind Words

What Knoxville pet owners say

"Took my anxious rescue dog in for the first time. Dr. Rivera spent twenty minutes just letting him settle before touching him. He sat on the floor and let Duke come to him. I have never seen anything like that at any other practice."

KM
Karen Mitchell
Duke — Pit Bull Mix, Rescue

"We moved from Nashville and tried two other vets in Knoxville before finding Maplewood. The difference is night and day. Dr. Chen remembered that our cat Miso doesn't like being picked up — from a note she made six months earlier. That's the kind of detail that matters."

TJ
Tyler & Jess Nakamura
Miso — Tabby Cat, 6 years

"Our rabbit Clover needed dental work and two other vets told us they don't see rabbits. Maplewood not only saw her — they were fantastic. Jamie called the next day to check how she was eating. Above and beyond."

RP
Rachel Patel
Clover — Holland Lop Rabbit, 3 years

"When we had to say goodbye to our 14-year-old beagle last spring, Dr. Chen came in on her day off because she'd known Biscuit since he was a puppy. She cried with us. That tells you everything about this place."

DW
David Washington
Biscuit — Beagle, 14 years (in memory)
